New Delhi, 6th December, STI

The inmates of the Tihar Jail in New Delhi took out a protest march
today against the possible assignment of Navjot Singh Sidhu to their
cell. The comedian and ex-cricketer is to be sentenced today for his
act of murdering a 65-year old man in a road rage case in 1988.

“No way I can stand the motor mouth,” Kalu Prasad Yadav, inmate of
cell 268-C, said. “I cannot bear him for an hour during his comedy
show on Star One,” Mr. Yadav, who is himself serving a 10-year
sentence in a corruption case, said. “Imagine sharing a cell with
him. I’ll be spooked.”

Legal representative were not amused either. “The authorities should
consider this case on humanitarian basis,” Mr. Ram Chormalani
said. The lawyer is appearing on behalf of Khun Singh and was speaking
to media persons assembled outside the court. “Being in a same area as
with Sidhu and listening to him for hours is harassment and
torture. Prisoners too have their rights which cannot be trampled
upon. ”

Meanwhile, the warden of the Tihar jail, Mr. Ghosla Khosla, denied
allegations that the solitary confinement punishment is being replaced
by one where the erring inmate has to spend an entire day in a cell
with Mr. Sidhu. “We respect the rights on the inmates,” he said.

Attempts to contact the comedian were futile once Mr. Sidhu’s agents
realized this reporter was in his late fifties.
